One of the functions of occupational health is to assess workers wishing to retire from their jobs due to ill-health. These can include workers with chronic illnesses or incomplete recovery from treatment.
First we would consider if the illness poses a threat to the safety of the individual and others and also whether they can continue to perform efficiently in the current role.
Secondly we would need to consider whether the individual is capable of doing another job role within the organisation in spite of the illness.
Criteria for early retirement on grounds of ill health, where independent medical opinion is required by the pensions board, needs to be proposed by an Occupational Health Physician.
